2nd Thurso Scout Group - Burns Supper - 24/02/2007 : 2nd Thurso : Scouts
Following on a long tradition, 2nd Thurso's Burns Supper was held on Saturday 24th February. As it was considerably later than usual it was suggested that we advertise it as the "First Burns Supper for 2008"! As well as enjoying the traditional Haggis, Neeps n' tatties with a wee dram or wine, there was a good helping of scottish trifle. Edgar Fisher once again presented a glowing immortal memory address that reached all the ages present. In what they hope was their "last" stands, John Crofts & Heather Carberry respectively, gave the toast to the lassies & the reply. Mitchell McLean toasted the Queen, Eilidh Stronach said grace and Robin Foster addressed & savaged the Haggis. The company was then entertained by our very own Pipe band and various other entertainers from within our sections. For once the chairman's (Brian Johnston) schedule was correct & the company was dismissed by 11pm.
Troop xmas treat - 15/12/2006 : 2nd Thurso : Scouts
Instead of an Xmas party the troop & explorers went ten pin bowling. The highest Scout score was 153 by James Spencer! Despite various attempts to remould the bumpers, we are hopeful they'll let us back again next year!
Abseiling at Forss - 24/08/2006 : 1st Thurso : Scouts
Thanks to Andrew Manson Welding making new ones, some stakes have been left in-situ for abseiling at the cliffs at Forss. 1st Thurso Scouts were first to make use of them with the help of Jim Sudd:
"We went abseiling on the cliffs at Forss. First time it was a bit scary at the top, very scary going down and great feeling when you get to the bottom. When asked how he was enjoying it, Jamie said "Aaaaah!", but he was only half way down his first time."
Blair Atholl Jamborette 2006 - 15/07/2006 : Caithness : Scouts
The 30th Scottish International Patrol Jamborette was held at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. The Jamborette is held every two years in the grounds of the castle. Blair Atholl sees a Scottish and International patrol come together, camp and take part in adventurous activities. The Scottish scouts then offer a period of home hospitality for their foreign friends at the end of the camp, forming life long friendships. As in previous years two patrols of six attended from Caithness. The area also supplied three leaders who attended as staff and helped in the running of the camp. Thurso to Castletown - 06/05/2006 : 1st Thurso : Scouts
Six 1st Thurso Scouts walked from their Scout Hall in Thurso to Castletown following the coast. It was a perfect day for walking in May - warm, but not too warm, and overcast. It took exactly 3 hours 24 minutes (as predicted by one of the leaders).
Climbing Wall visit - 02/03/2006 : 1st Thurso : Scouts
1st Thurso Scouts visited the Climbing Wall in Wick Scout Hall. For most of them, it was their first visit since they were in Cubs. Since Scouts have to work a little bit harder, they didn't just climb but also had to learn how to belay. Not only does this extend their skills and save the leader effort, it also builds trust between the Scouts!
